Ghana sachet water price update April 8 2026 meeting

Millions of Ghanaians are breathing a sigh of relief today, Wednesday, April 8, 2026, as sachet water prices remain stable following a last-minute intervention by the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry.

The National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers (NASPAWAP) had initially planned to increase the retail price of a bag to GH¢15 starting this week, citing the global shortage of polymers and rising production costs. However, the government has stepped in to halt the increase, with an emergency meeting currently underway to find a middle ground.

Inside the Emergency Meeting

The Ministry, led by sector officials, is meeting with the leadership of NASPAWAP and the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA) today. The goal of the talks is to address the “unbearable” operational pressures on producers without passing the full cost onto the consumer.

Producers argue that the ongoing conflict in Iran has disrupted the supply of raw materials for plastic sleeves, making the current GH¢10 retail price unsustainable for many small-scale factories.

What Consumers Should Expect

For now, the Ministry has assured the public: “Consumers can continue to purchase sachet water at the current price.” Retailers are advised not to hoard products or arbitrarily increase prices while the negotiations are ongoing. Any final decision on a “reviewed” price structure is expected to be announced later this evening or early Thursday morning.

PortalGhana Perspective

Sachet water remains the primary source of drinking water for over 70% of urban Ghanaian households. A jump to GH¢15 would not only affect hydration but also increase the cost of living for the average worker. We will be monitoring the Ministry of Trade building today and will bring you the results of the meeting as soon as they break.
