ECG Launches GH¢240m Transformer Upgrade in Accra: Full List of Areas Facing Outages from April 8–10
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has officially commenced a major infrastructure overhaul today, Wednesday, April 8, 2026. The GH¢240 million project aims to replace and upgrade 12 primary transformers across the capital to end the frequent overloads and “dumsor” caused by the city’s rapid growth.
Why the Upgrade is Necessary
According to Dr. Charles Nii Ayiku, ECG’s Acting Director of Communications, several primary substations are currently operating at near-maximum capacity. The project will see transformer capacities increased from 20/26 MVA to 30/39 MVA, a move designed to stabilize the grid for the next decade.
Phase 1: Affected Areas (April 8 – April 10)
Residents in the following enclaves should prepare for phased power interruptions of approximately six hoursduring the day as engineers swap out the old units:
-
Adenta & Nmai-Dzor: Parts of Nanakrom, School Junction, Fair Heaven, University Farms, and East Legon Hills.
-
Teshie-Nungua & La: Teshie, Nungua, Katamanso, and surrounding residential zones.
-
Baatsonaa & Lashibi: Community 18, Sakumono, Regimanuel Estates, and parts of the Spintex Road.
Phase 2: Upcoming Works
ECG has indicated that a second phase is scheduled for mid-April (specifically April 15–17) focusing on the Lashibi and Spintex enclaves to complete the circuit stabilization.
PortalGhana Perspective
While a six-hour outage is inconvenient, this upgrade is a critical step toward a more reliable power supply. For business owners in East Legon Hills and Spintex, this is the “short-term pain” needed for long-term stability. We advise residents to keep their phones charged and unplug sensitive electronic appliances before the scheduled outages.
