KATH Doctors Suspend Strike Following Otumfuo’s Intervention

Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have suspended their industrial action after the intervention of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and engagements with key stakeholders. The suspension took effect at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

In a statement issued by the Komfo Anokye Doctors’ Association (KADA), the doctors said the decision was reached following fruitful discussions involving Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the hospital’s Board, management, and other stakeholders who demonstrated commitment to resolving the issues that led to the strike.

According to KADA, while members remain determined to ensure a complete resolution of their concerns, they considered the impact of the prolonged industrial action on patient care and public health. The association stated that the welfare of patients and the broader public interest influenced its decision to return to work while negotiations continue.

The doctors expressed appreciation to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the hospital board, management, and all parties who facilitated dialogue aimed at ending the impasse. KADA also acknowledged the support received from the Ghana Medical Association and several health-sector unions and professional bodies throughout the dispute.

The strike had disrupted healthcare delivery at KATH, leaving many patients stranded and affecting consultations and other medical services at one of Ghana’s leading referral hospitals. With the suspension now in effect, normal medical services are expected to resume as discussions continue toward a lasting resolution.

The industrial action was triggered by developments surrounding the suspension of KATH Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, a situation that sparked widespread concern among healthcare workers and the general public.
