Convicted Former MASLOC CEO Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu Arrives in Ghana to Begin 10-Year Jail Term

Former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, has arrived in Ghana following her extradition from the United States to begin serving her 10-year prison sentence.

Her return marks the culmination of a lengthy legal and extradition process that began after Ghanaian authorities sought her extradition to face the consequences of her conviction for multiple financial crimes. U.S. authorities arrested and detained her earlier this year following an extradition request submitted by Ghana.

Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu was convicted in absentia in April 2024 on charges including causing financial loss to the state, stealing, conspiracy, money laundering, and breaches of procurement laws. The court sentenced her to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.

A United States court subsequently approved her extradition, ruling that the extradition treaty between Ghana and the U.S. remained valid and that all legal requirements for her transfer had been met.

Her arrival in Ghana is expected to reignite public debate on accountability in public office and the country’s efforts to combat corruption and financial misconduct. Legal experts have also raised questions regarding the official commencement date of her prison term, considering the period between her conviction and extradition.

The case has attracted significant public attention over the years, with many viewing her extradition as a major milestone in Ghana’s pursuit of justice and enforcement of court judgments against public officials.

Authorities are expected to transfer her into the custody of the Ghana Prisons Service to begin serving her sentence in accordance with the law.
