Jason Arday, Cambridge’s Youngest Black Professor, Dies at 41
British sociologist and academic Jason Atta Kwei Arday, who made history in 2023 as the youngest Black professor appointed at the University of Cambridge, has died at the age of 41.
Arday was known for his work on race, inequality and education, particularly issues affecting Black and minority ethnic communities in higher education. Cambridge appointed him Professor of Sociology of Education in 2023 at the age of 37.
Reports say Arday was found unresponsive at a property in Battersea, south London, on August 14, 2026. Police confirmed his death and said that, although it was unexpected, it was not being treated as suspicious.
His death comes shortly after he resigned from Cambridge amid intense scrutiny over allegations concerning plagiarism and aspects of his academic credentials. Arday denied deliberate wrongdoing and had maintained that he was the subject of unfair treatment.
His family has expressed shock at his death and criticised what they described as a prolonged campaign of misinformation, abuse and harassment.
