Bank of Ghana Announces Conversion of Rural Banks to Community Banks

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has officially announced the conversion of Rural and Community Banks (RCBs) into Community Banks as part of ongoing reforms within Ghana’s microfinance sector.
According to a press release dated June 17, 2026, the move aligns with the Revised Microfinance Sector Framework and seeks to modernize the banking subsector while strengthening financial inclusion across the country.
Why the Change?
The central bank explained that the Rural Banking Sector has evolved significantly since its establishment in 1976. Over the years, these institutions have expanded beyond rural communities and now serve millions of customers across both rural and urban areas.
As a result, the term “Rural Bank” no longer fully reflects the scope of their operations. The rebranding to Community Banks is intended to better represent their broader role in supporting local economic development and providing accessible financial services.
