A group of five suspects has been remanded into custody following allegations of orchestrating a sophisticated fraud scheme that utilized AI deepfake technology to impersonate high-profile figures, including former President John Dramani Mahama.

The suspects are accused of defrauding unsuspecting victims of approximately GH₵500,000. According to authorities, the group created highly convincing video and audio content to solicit funds under the guise of official government or charitable initiatives.

Details of the Operation

The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with digital forensic experts, tracked the suspects after several victims reported being duped by what appeared to be genuine video calls and social media advertisements featuring the former President.

Legal Proceedings

The suspects were brought before the court this week, where the prosecution argued that their release could jeopardize ongoing investigations into their digital footprint and potential accomplices. The judge granted the request for remand, citing the complexity of the cybercrime and the risk of evidence tampering.

A Growing Threat

This case marks a significant escalation in the use of artificial intelligence for criminal activities in the region. The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has issued a fresh warning to the public, urging citizens to verify any financial requests—even those that appear to come from trusted public figures via video.
