The Ghanaian government has initiated formal proceedings to extradite a Russian national accused of secretly filming Ghanaian women and distributing the footage online without their consent.

Speaking to the press, Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam Nartey George, confirmed that the Ministry has officially invited the Russian Ambassador to Ghana for a high-level meeting this week to address the breach of privacy and cyber laws.

The case centers on a Russian individual who allegedly entered the country and filmed several women in private settings. While the MP noted that the women involved were adults who made their own choices to meet the individual, the legal issue lies in the unauthorized recording and commercial exploitation of that footage.

“It is not a crime to convince a man or a woman to go into your room… but it is a crime to record a person without their consent… and post it on a website for financial gain.” — Sam George

Key Government Actions

The Ghanaian authorities are taking a “very strong view” of the situation, citing clear violations of the country’s cyber security laws. Key steps include:

  • Diplomatic Engagement: An official invitation has been sent to the Russian Embassy to coordinate on the matter.
  • Interpol Collaboration: Ghana intends to activate all available resources through Interpol to track and secure the individual.
  • Legal Prosecution: The government’s goal is to bring the suspect back to Ghana to face trial and potential imprisonment.
