A 42-year-old man, Ilyasu Kunateh, has been jailed for defiling a seven-year-old boy in Wa.
The Ghana Police Service has secured a 10-year prison sentence with hard labour for a 42-year-old man, Ilyasu Kunateh, after he was found guilty of defiling a seven-year-old boy in Wa, Upper West Region.
According to a press release issued by the Upper West Regional Police Command on July 23, 2026, the conviction was secured through the efforts of the Regional Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU).
Police investigations revealed that the incident occurred on January 17, 2026, and was reported by the victim’s mother. The suspect was arrested on January 20, 2026, after the complaint was lodged with the police.
Following the report, investigators immediately commenced investigations and referred the child to a medical facility for examination while also ensuring he received psychosocial support. The accused was subsequently arraigned before the Wa High Court and remanded into police custody pending trial.
Delivering judgment on Thursday, July 23, 2026, Justice Osei-Wusu Antwi found Ilyasu Kunateh guilty of the offence and sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
The Upper West Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and ensuring that perpetrators of child abuse, sexual offences, and gender-based violence are brought to justice.
The Command also urged parents, guardians, caregivers, and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases of child abuse to the nearest police station for immediate action.
